Good news for people seeking 457 visas . DIBP announce an independent review into the Subclass 457 visa programme.

The Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Senator Michaelia Cash, has today announced an independent review into the Subclass 457 visa programme.

Senator Cash has said that the review panel’s recommendation should be evidence-based, and should relieve administrative burdens on business.

Minister Cash said given the importance of the 457 programme in supporting employers in industries and regions which are experiencing skill shortages, and the potential of the 457 programme to contribute to productivity growth in the Australian economy, a review of the integrity of the programme was warranted.

The panel’s final report will be given to the Assistant Minister by mid-2014.

Good news for Australian Employer sponsorship and 457 temporary visa applicants.
Nomination ceilings have been abolished!

In mid-2013 changes to sponsorship rules placed a ceiling on the number of positions a sponsoring employer could nominate.
Thankfully this limitation has been now been removed from sponsorship approvals , effectively turning back the clock on at least some of the red tape put in place by the last government.

A sponsorship approved after 14 February 2014 will still require the number of nominations to be noted, but further nominations can be lodged over and above the entered number, until the SBS approval expiry date, i.e. three years from date of approval.

Sponsorships that were approved prior to 14 February 2014 and subject to a nomination ceiling will still cease when the agreed number is reached, these sponsors will need to lodge a variation application with Immigration .

Update for anyone interested in Australian State Nominated Skilled Visas
The 2014 ACT Occupations List has been updated and comes into effect on 24 February 2014. Applications for ACT nomination submitted before 24/02/14 will be assessed against the old August 2013 Occupation List.
Employability in the ACT is the main focus when assessing applications for ACT nomination. You must be able to demonstrate there are sufficient employment opportunities in the nominated occupation to meet ACT nomination criteria.
